Chicago Wedding Pictures - July 21, 2007

My brother-in-law was married last weekend in Chicago. They opted for a really creative wedding - on a boat ("The Summer of George") - and were well rewarded for the risks they took. The weather was stunning, and we ended the boat cruise on Lake Michigan with the Saturday night fireworks put on by the city of Chicago off the end of Navy Pier. The city spends about $250,000 a night on the fireworks during the summer; you really can't top that as a send-off now can you?

Turkey 2007

An Interesting Trip

What an interesting week for a Sinophile to be in DC: Vice Premier Wu Yi and Commerce Secretary Paulson's second meeting in the follow-up to last year's visit from Hu Jintao, the Senate Banking Committee's hearing on China's currency manipulation, and the USCC hearings Thursday and Friday. More on this later. Traveling to DC is such a pleasure - the city is a blend of genteel southern manners with the energy and opportunities of much larger metropolis like New York. The highlight of the culinary adventures on this trip was Zaytinya, an authentic Greek mezze (think the Greek version of Spanish Tapas). Also worth mentioning was the Brickskeller and their selection of 1,000 ...

Finally … a Break in this *&%$#@ Weather

We have been having some of the worst April weather on record, but today at least it is sunny! So I took the dogs out to a local park where they could run and play. My girl shepherd Porsche can be off leash, which she flaunts over my boy shepherd Laser who can't be (a shelter dog we adopted, lovely dog, but always looking for someway to run off!). Anyway, some pictures of our outing below.

Washington DC - March 29 - 30

Out to DC again this week for the second USCC meeting of 2007. The weather could not have been more beautiful, so I walked from the Dirksen Senate Building almost all the way back to my hotel near the DuPont Circle ("almost" only because I ran out of walkway crossing the Potomac on Constitution Avenue!). Some beautiful pictures primarily because the day was so stunning.

Albuquerque - March 2007

This week's travel could have been a little less adventurous, what with the severe storms and the collusion of the airlines to fly into them, regardless of passenger comfort! Oh, and the mentally disturbed man who I shared a seat with for 4 hours and who explained in detail about his job as a steel working contractor but his much more interesting work (on his own time of course) where he was working on a theory of everything for physics which would, much to Peter Woit's dismay no doubt, incorporate super-string theory. Fair enough I say (after all Einstein was a patent clerk before he discovered general relativity); but then my seat companion quickly adds on that the ...

New York City - February 10-15, 2007

This trip was originally to end on the 14th, but Mother Nature had other plans. Not only is the 14th Valentine's Day, but it's also my wife's birthday. The good news is that I did not forget (really I didn't!), and that I have a series of great surprises planned for her, of which being stranded in NYC for this Northeaster to blow over was not one. Needless to say I'm bummed out at missing the day, and working on rationalizations on why the only two blizzards we have had in Indianapolis have both occurred while I have been traveling, thus leaving Jen to shovel the driveway both times. Pictures from my trip to NYC follow ...

Philadelphia & Washington DC - February 5-8, 2007

Pictures from on my way to the Carnegie Endowment's first debate of 2007 on US-China policy - military issues specifically. Washington was freezing, but it was a nice couple of days, including time in Georgetown and the Holocaust Museum. Then on to Philadelphia for a business meeting and, on my free night, a 76ers game.
